The 2015 Award for Excellence in Academic Teaching was given to Professor G. Gazetas

The 2015 Award for Excellence in Academic Teaching “Vassilis Xanthopoulos- Stephanos Pneymatikos” was given to
Dr. George Gazetas, Professor at the School of Civil Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA).

The ceremony of the Award for Excellence in Academic Teaching dedicated to the memory of Vassilis XANTHOPOULOS and Stephanos PNEVMATIKOS” and took place at the main Hall of the Old Parliament in Athens on December 4, 2015, at 19.00. The award presented by H.E. the President of the Hellenic Republic, Mr. Prokopios Pavlopoulos to Dr. George Gazetas. Prof. Theodosios Tasios, Emeritus Professor of NTUA, presented the academic work of the awardee. Professor Gazetas who then gave a talk on:

“Paradoxical case-histories in seismic geotechnical engineering”

The year 2015 marks the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Award, which is the only academic prize in Greece that rewards the excellence in academic teaching. The Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH) established the Award in the memory of Vassilis Xanthopoulos and Stephanos Pnevmatikos. They were both distinguished Professors at the University of Crete, members of FORTH, and internationally renowned scientists; they were murdered senselessly in 1990, while they were teaching an advanced seminar. The selection of the awardees is made by a committee of distinguished academic teachers from a wide range of scientific areas; the awardees upon their selection become automatically members of the committee.

Distinction of Professor G. Gazetas

Professor G. Gazetas  with Professor Ricardo Dobry (for the second time they jointly received a prize  ; in the 1980’s they received the ASCE Croes Medal for a paper on dynamic response of piles)  winning the ISET-Shamsher Prakash Award 2014. They selected by the Executive Committee of the  Indian Society of Earthquake Technology, for Significant Achievements in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics.

FINAL WORKSHOP “DARE” : 25-26 October 2013

FINAL  WORKSHOP  “DARE” :

Soil–Foundation–Structure Systems Beyond Conventional Seismic “Failure” Thresholds:  Application to New and Existing Structures and Monuments    (ERC  funded  project)

For the last five years my coworkers and I have had the fortune to be involved in research related to the development of a new paradigm  in seismic soil-foundation-structure interaction.  One of our promises to the sponsor was to have an open-to-all closing symposium, in order to communicate the main findings of our activities to the general profession.

We are thus having our Closing Workshop-Symposium from 25th of October afternoon until 26th noon, 2013.  I am attaching our flyer   and Program of the Symposium. The Symposiun will be held in a nice conference center in Kastri, at the outskirts of Athens.

DINSTINCTION of Professor G. Gazetas

4th Ishihara Lecture, 2013.
Professor  George Gazetas

The  Ishihara Lecture  was delivered this year by Professor George Gazetas of the National Technical University at Athens during the 18th International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (18th ICSMGE) in Paris, France, September 2-5, 2013.

In 2003 the Technical Committee on Earthquake Geotechnics of the IASMGE established a heritage lecture to honor the great engineer and scientist, Professor Kenji Ishihara, a pioneer in geotechnical earthquake engineering. The lecture is given every four years by an internationally renowned researcher–scientist to recognize his contributions in the field.  This was the 4th lecture in the series.  The previous three recipients were:

2004:  Prof. Liam Finn  (Canada)

2007:  Prof.  Izzat Idriss  (USA)

2011:  Prof. Ricardo Dobry  (USA)

The title of Prof. Gazetas’ lecture was : “Soil-Foundation-Structure Systems Beyond Conventional Seismic Failure Thresholds”  .

NEWS from TECHNICAL COMMITTEE TC203 on EARTHQUAKE  GEOTECHNICAL  ENGINEERING  and ASSOCIATED  PROBLEMS  2012  YOUNG  RESEARCHER  AWARD in  EARTHQUAKE  GEOTECHNICAL  ENGINEERING

Assistant Professor IOANNIS  ANASTASOPOULOS :

The inaugural recipient of the Young Researcher Award in Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering is Dr. Ioannis Anastasopoulos,Assistant Professor in the School of Civil Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). His research spans many areas of geotechnical earthquake engineering, with a specific focus on soil–foundation–structure interaction (SFSI). His work on SFSI has included contributions both to the numerical and experimental aspects of this problem. He has been the driving force behind the development of a new Experimental Facility for Simulation of Soil-Structure Systems at NTUA, which includes a shaking table, a fault-rupture box, and a pushover facility

PRESENTATIONS AND DISCUSSION
