L’Aquila is one of the most important and populated cities in central Italy, with about 70,000 inhabitants. The city is located in the central part of the Apennine chain, a region characterized by normal fault earthquake. One such fault activated on 6th of April 2009, causing a Mw = 6.3 earthquake, that devastated L’ Aquila and surrounding villages of the Abruzzi region, causing 300 deaths and leaving sixty thousand homeless.
