Transparent Laminar Box

The Laboratory is equipped with a laminar box, also designed and constructed in house. This device is necessary for realistic simulation of dynamic soil response, allowing the soil to deform freely. Its pioneering design allows direct observation of deformation, as it is completely transparent at the one side. This way, and in contrast to typical laminar boxes, besides from sensor measurements (such as accelerometers, pressure transducers, etc.), image analysis techniques (such as Particle Image Velocimetry – PIV) are also directly applicable. Its dimensions are 1.6 x 1 x 1, allowing a maximum soil depth of 0.7 m.
